There are a lot of movers in northern VA. From huge national corporations to inexperienced local shops, if you are moving from Gainesville to Arlington or anywhere in between, you’ll find plenty of moving companies. The problem is that some will take you for a big ride on fees!

Yesterday, a woman called from her home in Dominion Valley. She and her husband along with a brand new baby, are moving to Tennessee. Like so many other families in the area, work has them moving every few years. When she called into Craig Van Lines, we were her third phone call for a moving quote…and therein lies the problem…

Price shopping for a move can save you money – you never know when you’ll find a discount special on moving. There is a much bigger issue, however, with the fact that neither of the other two companies were able to show enough value in what they were proposing. If the value presented to the client matches the price, shopping around for something different will not be necessary.

The first place she called – a big national firm – quoted her twice – two times! – what the second company quoted. In one case, the price was so high, value had nothing to do with it. It was just off the chart ridiculous. The second option was a great bargain, but the guy on the phone sounded “a little rough around the edges,” as the client put it.

By the time the client called Craig Van Lines, she was dreading the hassle of moving. To tell you the truth, most people dread it! But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are a couple ways to save money on your move:

1) Start packing early. Pick up some moving and storage boxes – you can get these at a big box retailer or any storage facility – and start working on your packing. If everything is neatly packed in boxes, the movers will have less work to do.

3) Check your big toys. If you have a 4-wheeler, consider getting it on a trailer instead of having it moved. The same goes for any large, specialty item.

4) Watch out for nickel and dimes! We’ve heard of moving companies charging $10 for a roll of tape. Just make sure you know what you’re being charged for before the move. As always, make sure the person quoting the job is being forthcoming with you.
