Moving is one of the most exciting times in your life, but it can also come with a few headaches. Between switching addresses, packing up your home, and driving long distances, the last thing you want to worry about is lifting heavy items or breaking your valuable goods.

Above all else, there are a few temperamental items in your home that can cause a headache to erupt when you least expect it. Before you start putting your life into tiny boxes, consider hiring moving assistance when you want to move these hard-to-pack items.

Fish tanks

Fish tanks are particularly difficult for two primary reasons: they’re heavy and they’re fragile. On top of that, they also have a variety of components that you need to keep organized throughout your move. Not only do you have to drain the water, but you also have to clean the tank, keep your fish safe amidst the jostling car, and pad the item so it doesn’t get broken on your move. When you’re finally ready to load it into the truck, moving a large, heavy tank is practically impossible.

Luckily, moving assistance services are adept at moving this hard-to-transport item. Moving services give you the best advice for readying your aquarium and they can also supply you with the right tools to move it safely. For example, most movers will recommend leaving a small amount of water at the bottom of the tank so you don’t need to start from scratch again when you move into your new home. This is particularly beneficial for temperamental saltwater tanks, but you might not have known it without moving assistance.

Artwork

Artwork is the cherry on top of a perfect home. Not only can these pieces set the ambiance for a room but they can also hold sentimental value to their owners. Paired with exorbitantly high prices, artwork has never been difficult to move.

After all, bubble wrap can only go so far when you try to move house by yourself. Instead of struggling with canvas pieces and glass frames, rely on moving assistance to pad, pack, and protect your most valuable items. Statues and sculptures might have odd shapes that only a professional can protect. You can rest assured that your beloved pieces of art won’t get damaged in the chaos of your move.

Plants

While you couldn’t imagine leaving home without your plants, these items might give you a headache when you try to move them. Plants are living organisms that need particularly rapt attention during the moving process. One false move and you might break their fragile pot or ruin their sensitive leaves. Should these items shift during transport, you might also have a huge mess of dirt on your hands — and your rented moving truck.

It’s recommended that you avoid moving plants if possible, but for many, this option simply isn’t in the cards. Luckily, hiring moving assistance can help protect your plants and stop an impending mess in its tracks.

Pianos

This wouldn’t be a moving blog unless pianos are mentioned. The classic moving nightmare, baby grand pianos are the quintessential hard-to-move item. Not only are these instruments oddly shaped, but they’re also big, heavy, and incredibly fragile. It’s not uncommon for a moving company to rely on special cranes to transport a piano from one location to another. Unless this piece is a family heirloom or holds significant sentimental value, it might be in your best interests to sell the item and make it someone else’s problem.

Regardless, movers have battled these baby grands for years and have developed streamlined ways of transporting them from one place to another. Rely on moving help for the best piano moving advice.

Home appliances

It makes sense that you’d want to take your refrigerator and stove to your new home but it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy. When you want to move such big, electronic items, it’s in your best interests to rely on specialty equipment. Otherwise, you might damage your appliances, damage your home, or even damage yourself.

Fred Craig

Fred C. Craig III is the owner of Craig Van Lines, a Northern Virginia moving company his family has run for more than a century. The business began in 1918 when J.H. Craig hauled cattle, feed, and hay from Virginia’s rural farms to the markets of the DC area. As the region shifted from farmland to residential communities in the 1940s, the family started moving households after hours and on weekends, eventually building the full-service moving company Craig Van Lines is today. Fred carries on that tradition, providing the same quality and care his family has brought to this community for over 100 years.
