And what was the matter?

“MA! PA!”

It was our daughter; our daughter was the matter. (Okay, if I’m being honest, it was really Ma and me that were the matter, but we’ll get to that in a few moments.)

“MA! PA!” Sally shouted again. “What are you doing in bed?! You’re moving in three days! You have to pack. We have to clean. There’s so much to do!”

“Sally, Sally, calm down,” Ma said, still in bed. “We can’t be moving that soon. It’s not even Christmas yet; now is the time for our long winter’s nap. Next week is for moving.”

“Ma! You’ve been napping too long,” Sally sighed. “Christmas is over. It’s New Year’s Eve, and you’re moving in THREE days.”

“Oh… Oh my.”

“Yes! ‘Oh my’ is right. Ma, get out of bed. We have to get started.”

Ma leapt out of bed. “What do we do first?”

Ma, and Pa, and Sally spent the next 12 hours purging, and packing, and cleaning, and purging, and packing, and cleaning some more. By the end of the day, the clutter was gone, and the attic was clear; they had made a dent, but not a very large one. The kitchen still needed to be packed, and the books — oh my gosh, all the books.

“There’s no way we’re going to get all of this done ourselves,” Sally looked around, dismayed. “I don’t understand how you two slept through Christmas.”

“Well…,” Pa relented. “I think we were in denial.”

(I told you it was Ma and me that were the matter.)

“DENIAL!” Sally shouted. “You’ve been looking forward to this move for months.”

Ma and Pa shrugged. “This is the house you grew up in. Leaving — even when we’re headed for the paradise that is Florida — is not easy, Sal.”

“Aww, Pa. That’s sweet. But you still have to move out, so I can move back in.”
