As if the holiday season isn’t stressful enough, you’ve decided now is a good time to move! First, congratulations! Moving is just as stressful as the holidays, but it’s also just as exciting. A new home means a new start, a fresh, clean slate to kick off 2015.

I’m going to give it to you straight: You’ll have to entertain family and friends, and attend holiday parties, and shop for gifts, and make cookies — and you’ll still have to get all of your packing done. In a word: Purge.

If those porcelain figurines have sat untouched since you moved into your old house, what makes you think they’ll fare any differently in the new house? Get rid of them.

Maintain tradition.

While you’re packing boxes filled with dishes and books, your neighbors are unpacking boxes of Christmas decorations. This whole moving thing sure makes holiday traditions a little more difficult to pull off — but that doesn’t have to be the case.

Sure, you may have to load the truck on December 27, but that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate for the holidays. You’ll just have to go about it a little differently. Pin stockings to the stack of moving boxes in your dining room. Set up the tree in your empty living room, and camp indoors by the glow of the star on top. The kids might even snag a glimpse of Santa.

Let someone else host.

The feast is the best part of every holiday, am I right? Of course I’m right. That’s why you insist on hosting every year. The hustle and bustle of everyone in the kitchen, mimosas flowing; the whole family gathered ‘round the dinner table. There’s just something so… wonderful about it all.

But this year, your holiday china is packed; your tablecloths are packed, and you’re not sure you could find your turkey-roasting pan if you tried. Let someone else host this year. Take a break from all the packing, and relax. You can host again next year.
